If drawing in a CAD program is a barrier to buying a 3D printer, then Thinkercad is a nice free online program to learn it. Actually it is a children's program, but you can make beautiful things with it. For the advanced users there is OnShape, which can also be used online for free. But this does require more skills.

Nice one. Been doing a little 3d printing today, too. Was using Tinkercad, which is very simple CAD. Making little bits that are part of big bits, that are part of a bigger project, though not a rocket! Do you have space for a hammock in the pilothouse? If so they are good, especially the sideways types.

Being out in the weather.... yeah it reminds us we are not in control but there is also a rightness about being there too. I just went out to install a hatch on the dinghy i'm building and stood in the rain for a while.... it seemed all the cares of the world just dropped off.... So front half is done.... now for the aft. Yeah nesting dinghy, our sail boat is not so large as yours ;)

In most cases if your machine is dialed in right. You don't need the support. The machine can bridge that gap. The quality of your first layer that is at the supports and how easy it is to remove the supports shows the machine can bridge it without too much sagging. Even if that first layer sags a bit the subsequent layers will be able to build off it and it will still be a good print.

I laughed about the “square” cut plywood. A few weeks ago I was repairing one of the pilot house doors on my boat and I picked up a piece of plywood at another big box store (the blue one) I was trying to get the thing to fit and was grumbling some cuz I couldn’t get it ti fit in the track. I figured the track wasn’t square wrong, I finally looked at the cut they had made! Maybe they have the same saw!

Hey Doug, try putting a square on the factory made plywood corners sometime. You will be amazed how many of them are not square. I was shall we say " A wee bit annoyed" when I figured out why my stuff wasn't square. The solution was find and use a good factory corner to start, or make one myself. And don't forget to make sure your square IS square. That's a great way to ruin your entire CENSORED day! Jim Y

Acetone works with ABS Plastic. I'm not sure it will work with PLA. Since the Acetone melts the ABS plastic you can use it as a glue that is stronger than the original 3D print bond. As you're essentially plastic welding the ABS plastic pieces together. You can also create a "Slurry" by taking ABS plastic (usually supports that would normally go to the trash) and placing them in a glass jar. Pour a small amount of acetone into the jar and let it sit over night. in the morning you will have a melted liquid ABS plastic slurry. You can use it to repair broken ABS 3D prints or to thicken weak areas. you brush on the slurry and let it sit. Once the Acetone evaporates the plastic rehardens and is as strong as plastic injected parts. It looks like this is what you are trying with the PLA, however I am not sure that it will work the same way with PLA. :)
